Fat Liberation & Health at Every Size™ Training
February 4 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Fatness is not an indicator of health. In this two-hour workshop, we’ll explore how fatphobia creates a system of inequity that harms fat people, thus affecting their health. We will talk first about Health at Every Size™, a set of principles and frameworks that presents an alternative to the weight-centered approach to treating patients of all sizes. HAES™ promotes health equity, ending weight discrimination, and improved access to quality healthcare regardless of size. Next, we’ll explore Fat Liberation, a movement that maintains fatness at the center of its narrative and focuses on the way fat people are mistreated, marginalized, and oppressed by various systems. Through this training, participants will challenge and shift oppressive thinking and gain insight into ways to better support fat people and people who have experienced weight discrimination.
By the end of the workshop, participants will;
- Define health beyond myths and misconceptions
- Discuss drawbacks of dieting
- Learn about the HAES™ model
- Explore the history of Fat Liberation
- Discuss differences between Body Positivity and Fat Liberation
- Explore how anti-fat bias causes harm
- Examine connections between anti-fat bias and other oppressive ideologies and systems
Facilitator:
Skylar Kelley, RN is the Nurse Team Lead at Pathways Vermont. They have worked in various nursing settings including ICU, cardiac care, and in the community. They believe that healthcare that feels supportive and choice-centered should be available to ALL of us, ALL of the time…for FREE! Skylar is passionate about harm-reduction, collective liberation, and donuts. They live in Colchester, VT with their spouse, toddler, and two cats. In their spare time they play dress-up with said toddler and try to convince her that walking in the woods continuously in one direction (you might call it “hiking”) is a good time.
